Um, I was just wondering...

Have you ever run into a sticky situation and not known how to handle it? Curious about what you should do about a difficult student? Unsure about how to best work with your professor? Ask a question on the blog and get advice from fellow RA's. Remember, when discussing problems with students, don't use their real name.

I'm wondering what professors are most concerned about in the conference notes that we send them? Is it what the student was struggling with, their attitude toward the session, or what?

Different professors may be interested in different things. I try to include a sentence or two on how prepared they were, how responsive they were, and how we talked about the paper (thesis statements, topic sentences, citations, assignment requirements etc.)

I usually give a couple specific comments on how we spent the majority of the time. If a student was unprepared (i.e. showed up without a paper or with no ideas) or if they miss the appointment, I make sure the professor knows it. I've also found that professors appreciate some general feedback on what the trends were, for example, if most of the students misunderstood the same thing, or had similar struggles. This can be useful information for an instructor.
